One Room Challenge – Fall 2020: Week 6, The Final Office Reveal!

Welcome to the One Room Challenge Final Reveal!! This has been such an exciting and rewarding experience!  Over the years I’ve enjoyed watching participants in the challenge and it’s been on my bucket list of things to do.  Now, I can say that I’ve done it and it’s definitely one for the books!  Given our new norms, I am so happy that I was able to create a space for my husband to not only work but to also relax.  He’s so deserving and anyone who knows him knows that he takes such good care of us (his family).

Before I get into the reveal, I have to take a moment and thank Linda Weinstein, the founder of the One Room Challenge (ORC) for pioneering this event that showcases so much creativity and talent in the name of community.  As noted on the ORC website, “The ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas”.  I’ve met some wonderful friends on this journey who have transformed rooms in their homes into beautiful new spaces.

I’d like to thank my husband Bruce and my kids Robin and Andre for being so supportive these past 6 weeks.  Thanks to my friends and family who have been there with me every week, cheering and believing in me.  Thank you my readers for following along each week and giving such good energy.

In case you missed any of my previous weekly ORC posts, see below for links to:

Let’s take a look at what the office used to look like.

Before

Before

The space was functional before, but not ideal.  It didn’t reflect my husband’s style and personality.

Are you ready for something old, something new and something blue?! A perfect blend of old meets new that creates a balance between work and comfort.  Well, here’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for!!

Bold, Bright, Warm and Inviting Home Office – just like my hubby!
Featured: New York City Wall Art, Snack Bar and Updated Chairs
Featured: Jamaica Wall Art, Overhead lighting, Office Chair & Desk Lamp

Each piece in the room was curated with meaning and purpose so that my husband can feel comfortable in his space.  It’s all a collection that tells his story.

Let’s take a look around.  I know today is all about the pictures so I’ll try to keep it short.

Accent Wall

Board and Batten Accent Wall

Constructing this wall was so much fun!  After trying a few samples of blue hues, I fell in love with Indigo by Sherwin Williams for the accent wall and Gray Screen also by Sherwin Williams for the other three walls.  We kept the existing office furniture and wanted a color that would make them look new again.  Mission accomplished!  I’ve gotten so many compliments on the color choice and I couldn’t be happier!

The beautiful island of Jamaica known for its beautiful beaches, food and culture is my husband’s birthplace and favorite getaway.  He loves the music, climate, scenery and food and we visit every chance we get.  Because of his love, I knew there had to be a representation of our island and the map showing each parish and their capital city is a great addition to the space.  This map was surprisingly my most challenging piece to find.  I knew in my mind what it should look like, but I couldn’t find one that worked with my vision.  I almost gave up on it.  But, where there is a will, there is a way!

Jamaica Wall Art created by Yours Truly

I flexed my skills and let’s just say, I can add “digital artist” to my list of career options.  Since it’s for my own personal use, I got some online images and created this awesome wall art.  I pieced together the outline of the island, the coat of arms which is a symbol of the country’s motto, and of course you cannot have a map without a scale and a compass (*wink).  I printed it on canvas with a slight yellow tint.  I am so happy with the way it turned out and of course my husband loves it too which is a bonus.

Old Frame

I thrifted the frame a while ago and it’s been sitting in my garage.  It definitely came in handy for this project and saved me quite a bit of money.  Custom frames can be very expensive.  I carefully pulled the frame apart so that I could get a precise measurement before ordering a print of the map and I changed the mat board’s color from blue to black.  I kept all the other pieces the same.  I am so proud of this piece!

Backyard View

He now has a gorgeous view of the backyard and the beautifully styled bookcase thanks to the newly repositioned desk.  I often see beautifully styled bookshelves, but they are usually behind the desk and out of view for the person sitting at the desk.  I knew I wanted to change that in this design.

The new office chair offers so much comfort for long hours of sitting.

Cozy corner

Cozy Corner

So inviting isn’t it?!  The fall foliage outside the window blends beautifully with the room.  This cozy corner is perfect for a power nap since this chair is not only a glider, but a recliner too!  It’s so comfy!! He can even switch seats when he’s tired of working at his desk.  With such a great view of mother nature outside, I’m sure he’ll spend a lot of time here.  This may end up being my cozy corner too! Lol

I am still drooling over the blue side table!  Such a great find and a great addition to the room!  It pops and so does this accent wall.

Window treatment

DIY Window Treatment

I didn’t want to block the light or the view so this faux roman shade is the perfect style for this room.  I made the roman shade with a few yards of fabric remnant (the chairs featured below were recovered using the same fabric).  The black buttoned leather trim was the perfect touch!

If for some reason he’d like some privacy or want block out the light, he still has access to the wooden blinds that are neatly stacked behind the shade.

Styled bookshelves and clear picture ledge

Clear Picture Ledge

I styled the bookshelves with quite a few meaningful objects to give the office a little personality.  Most of them have a special meaning to my husband.

Bookshelf Styling

Recovered Chairs

The chairs look brand new!  Repainting the chairs black and recovering them with this beautiful fabric really gave the chairs new life.  The kids can come in for homework assistance and have their own space on the other side of the desk.  Win, win!

Wall Art

Featured: Floor lamp and Manchester United Wall Art – hubby’s favorite football club

Part of making your house feel like a home is selecting art that means something special to you.  Each piece was specifically selected to bring joy to my husband.  His favorite island (Jamaica), favorite cities (New York, London and Atlanta) and I could not leave out his football club (Manchester United) reps so well in his new office.  They all bring such wonderful memories.

Lighting

Overhead lighting

The overhead pendant light was love at first sight!

Take a look below at the picture light at night.  It literally lights up New York City!!!  I made the floating frame and painted it the same color as the accent wall, Sherwin Williams Indigo.  The floor lamp noted in a few pics is sleek and fits nicely in the cozy corner.  The desk lamp has several color/brightness setting and has USB port for charging.

Area Rug

The beautiful rug provides a nice balance and elevates the ambiance of the room.  Love, love, love!

Snack Bar

Snack Bar

Perfect for the times he’ll need a little energy in the middle of the day or a quick snack to fight off hunger before meals.

I am so happy that I was able to capture my husband’s style and personality into this space.  What makes me feel even better is the fact that I got his stamp of approval.

One Room Challenge Fall 2020 Complete!

Now it’s time to celebrate the reveals of the other guest participants.  The featured designers presented their spaces yesterday.  Thanks again for joining me on this journey and I look forward to the Spring 2021 ORC!
