DIY Winter Planter with Evergreens and Faux Stems

Each season I update my urn planters and I thought it would be fun to share my latest project.  If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the Instagram Reel (short video) that I posted which showed the process.  Today on the blog, I’ll provide more details into the design and selections for the arrangement.

Front Door Winter Wreath

Last year’s front door wreath was the inspiration for my design this year since I plan on reusing the wreath.  I love the wreath because while it serves as my Christmas decor, it will last well beyond Christmas.  An added bonus is that the wreath is pre-lit and has a timer.  The evening glow is beautiful!  I just absolutely love the greenery and winter vibes.  These arrangements should last through early spring and keep my front door looking fresh all season!  I have the perfect spot in my yard to plant the evergreens at the end of the season.

See last year’s front door decor with a similar color scheme and it truly lasted through spring.

If you’d like to achieve a similar look here are a list of items used:

  • Urn or large planter – you’ll need a planter that is durable and appropriate for your climate.  Really cold weather for instance can crack/break your pot when left outside for a long time.
  • Dry foam
  • Filler –
      • Mixed evergreen bunch (includes a variety of evergreen clippings) from your local nursery
      • Faux flocked pine stems (I didn’t find real ones)
      • Faux frosted stems
      • Plastic branches
      • Pine Cones
      • Snow flake or other embellishments such as berries, ribbons, ornaments, etc.
      • Preserved floral moss

I picked up my evergreens which serve as my base from Lowes:

  • 2.25 gal. Carolina Sapphire Cypress (for the large urn)
  • 2.5 qt. Emerald Green Arborvitae (for the small pot)

You can purchase your faux stems and embellishments from your local craft stores (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, etc.)

Urns/Planters

The process:

I kept the Carolina Sapphire Cypress in its original container and placed it in my urn.

I then placed dry foam in the front to secure the faux stems later.

Added Dry Foam to Urn

Arrange the mixed evergreen branches by poking them directly in the evergreen container and pushing them down into the soil.

Adding Mixed Evergreen Branches

Add your faux frosted stems into the dry foam to secure it in the container.

Adding Faux Frosted Stems

Fill the empty spaces with the faux pine stems, pine cones, plastics branches (be careful not to use foam branches or berries as they will pop in cold weather), preserved floral moss and other embellishments.

Small Pots

I kept the Emerald Green Arborvitae in its original container and placed it in the small gold pot.  I then filled in the empty spaces with preserved floral moss.

And there you have it!  Winter pots that will last through the entire season!  If the added evergreen branches dry up, I’ll remove them and add more greenery or faux flowers to keep the pot looking full.
